Welcome to the Library

The Overton Grange Library is a large, bright, popular space which students can visit every break and lunch time to read, study and relax.  The library is a vital space within the school and promotes an enthusiasm for learning, and the development of reading for pleasure and reading for empowerment.

Books

The library contains fiction and non-fiction catalogues, a bank of computers and table space for 30 students, as well as soft chairs and bean bags.  Wall displays offer recommendations of books made popular through social media, book awards and student voice, in addition to encouraging students to read different genres and themes. Texts relevant to displays are showcased to advertise the library’s stock and encourage students to select new and different titles.

The fiction catalogue currently contains around 2,500 books and counting.  The collection continues to grow with books selected according to students’ interests, diversity and representation, and literary merit.  Students can make requests for books by adding to the request form in the library.  For student ease, fiction texts are organised according to genre, examples include action, comedy, classics, fantasy, and graphic novels.

Borrowing

Books can be borrowed two at a time for two weeks, after which they need to be returned or renewed. Books can be returned directly to the librarian or posted through the ‘book drop’ box just outside the library.

The Catalogue

The library’s catalogue is a cloud based programme which students can access outside of school via a username and password.  Once logged in, students can browse the catalogue, see popular books, reserve books, and leave book reviews. The library catalogue can be accessed here.

Student Librarians

The library has a team of student librarians from Years 8 – 11 who assist with book borrowing, keeping the library organised, and advising fellow students of exciting books to read.  The application process for this role is renewed each year in the summer term, whereby students fill out an application form and attend an interview.  Some student librarians volunteer as part of their Duke of Edinburgh Award.

Library Lessons and Events

Year 7 students receive induction lessons where they are able to explore the library and understand its importance, expectations and how it works.  Following their induction, Year 7 will engage in library lessons once a month where they will explore different texts, themes, and understand the importance of having good information literacy skills.

Throughout the year there are a number of events that take place in association with the library including various pop up events, World Book Day, author visit and the Yoto Carnegie book award reading group.
